Friday Larchive – Thrilling Larventure
Fridays, we open the Larchives, Lar’s extensive archive of art work oddities, and share a few pieces. Sometimes there will be a theme, or a reason behind the choices. Other times there will be none.
Last week, I mentioned how I came across a heretofore unknown litter of Marvel superhero/cat mash-ups Lar did 10 years ago by Googling Lar DeSouza Daredevil.
The cats weren’t my only discovery.
Mixed in with Cat Hulk and Cat Cloak & Dagger was what looked like Rayne as a super hero.
The Mysterious Art
I didn’t recognize the art, and the only source for adult Rayne on a full comic page that I knew of was the Bra-Man one-shot comic, which I knew this wasn’t. Plus, although cartoony and playful, this art was sincere. The only Rayne-as-a-superhero art I can recall is satirical.
Upon closer inspection, I realized that this wasn’t Rayne. The jaw and cleft chin were wrong, and the eyebrows were the wrong shape and colour. So what was this?
The Thrilling Answer!
According to the source of the art, it was a page from The Thrilling Adventure Hour graphic novel. I e-mailed Lar to confirm.
YES!! I got to draw the Captain Laserbeam comic! 11 pages. It was a bit of a rush… Super fun!!

Wild, I had no idea! Mystery solved.
Unless you are asking yourself…
What Is The Thrill Adventure Hour?
The Thrilling Adventure Hour was a staged production and podcast in the style of old time radio. Every week, a talented voice cast, live band, and foley artists brought all genre of recurring segments to life.
Lar worked on the graphic novel adaptation of The Adventures of Captain Laserbeam, a bombastic super hero alliteration aficionado. Other popular segments include Sparks Nevada – Marshal on Mars, a Flash Gordon sci-fi serial mashed up with an old west setting, and Beyond Belief, featuring high society socialite paranormal detectives Frank and Sadie Doyle.
Regular cast included Paget Brewster, Paul F. Tompkins, Marc Evan Jackson, Busy Philipps, and John DiMaggio. Regular guests include JK Simmons, and Linda Cardellini, Nathan Fillion and his Castle costar Molly Quinn. Episodes of Thrilling Adventure Hour even ended up as bonus content on the DVD of a season of Castle.
Join The Adventure
I was an avid listener when recordings of The Thrilling Adventure Hour were available as a podcast on Nerdist (back when it was a podcast network). It took a hiatus and then found a new home at the Forever Dog Podcast Network.
I just found that out. I assumed the hiatus was the end as the cast got more famous and busier as a result. Nope, there are new episodes of The Thrilling Adventure Hour as recent as July 24th.
Guess what I just subscribed to.
