Friday Larchive – Lart Is Politics

Fridays, we open the Larchives, Lar’s extensive archive of art work oddities, and share a few pieces. Sometimes there will be a theme, or a reason behind the choices. Other times there will be none.

“The best art is political and you ought to be able to make it unquestionably political and irrevocably beautiful at the same time.”
― Toni Morrison

Lar is irrevocably beautiful inside, outside, and in everything he produces, and he is not one to shy away from using his talent and his platform to voice his political concerns. Here are a few of his recent political pieces, captioned by his comments.

“Sorta Editorial Cartoon: The President of Ego. With thanks to Randy Milholland @choochoobear for the inspiration. Enjoy. Share. Comment as you see fit.”
“Editorial cartoon: I woke up angry again.”
“Editorial cartoon: With thanks to @brianklaas for his Twitter observations yesterday. A little fast & sketchy because I don’t want Donnie living rent free in my head too much, but these moments NEED to be called out and witnessed.
“I recently saw an interview with @stevebrodner who said we must ‘occupy the silence’. We mustn’t let attrocities go by without calling them out. We mustn’t let the silence of being a bystander normalize it. I need to work to shake off the weariness & lift my pen more. “

That last comment especially resonated with me. When there’s a peaceful attempt at a protest or when there’s a school shooting, those opposed to change try to shame those who speak up by characterizing them as being ungrateful or opportunistic. But what is really happening is that they are being inconvenienced by someone else’s pain, and the easy way to deal with that pain is to ignore it. By obeying their request for silence, we are betraying those whose pain we believe we care about. To truly show that we care, we must not be silent.
