Friday Larchive – In Honour of Joe Ruby

Fridays, we open the Larchives, Lar’s extensive archive of art work oddities, and share a few pieces. Sometimes there will be a theme, or a reason behind the choices. Other times there will be none.

To commemorate the passing of Joe Ruby, the man who put the Ruby in Ruby-Spears, here are some Lar art in the style of of some of Joe Ruby’s most popular co-creations and contributions.

In case the name isn’t familiar:

Both [Joe] Ruby and [Ken] Spears started out … writing stories for such programs as Space Ghost and The Herculoids. In 1969, they were assigned the task of developing a mystery-based cartoon series for Saturday mornings, the result of which was Scooby-Doo, Where Are You!. They left Hanna-Barbera shortly… Ruby-Spears Productions was founded in 1977… The company’s first breakout was The Puppy Who Wanted A Boy. The company’s credits include the animated series FangfaceGoldie Gold and Action JackThe Plastic Man Comedy/Adventure ShowThundarr the BarbarianRubik, the Amazing Cube, the 1983 version of the Alvin and the Chipmunks series, Mister TSectaursThe Centurions, the 1988 Superman series, the Police Academy animated series and the American Mega Man cartoon series.

The above animation inspired a lot of Lar art, Scooby-Doo in particular. You can find some of Lar’s favourites here and in a similar blog on Looking For Group.

RIP Joe Ruby.
