Indeed, we’re still fucking with the website, so if you see anything weird, assume it’s a gremlin.
The main things on the agenda this week are-
- Comic Navigation, going to get the arrows on the sides of the comic in addition to the text links below.
- Ads, trying a few new networks out for quality. To begin with, they’ll appear mostly on the comic page.
- New Readers page, working to completely replace it with an LICD Wiki. It’s a big project to tackle but after almost a quarter century in publication, a knowledge base might be welcome.
Main thing that’s on my mind these days is history, the fact that no one takes the time to learn about it and we are destined as a society to make the same mistakes over and over again.
In 1938, British Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain (not to be confused with the guys who make the garage door lifts) signed The Munich Agreement with Nazi Germany. The deal included giving up territory in what-was Czechoslovakia in exchange for Hitler pinky promising that his expansion into Europe was over.
Give the invader what they wanted, and they would stop.
How did that turn out, I wonder?
Germany invaded Poland about a year later; fully kicking off World War 2. Chamberlain is now viewed as the poster boy for appeasement and the lesson is clear.
So why is this on my mind? And how does this apply to modern times?
In 2008, Russia invaded Georgia and the world shrugged it off.
In 2014, Russia invaded Crimea and the world shrugged it off.
In 2022, Russia invaded all of Ukraine and the world finally reacted. For a time, at least. Now the appeasers are the loudest voices in the room and it’s the invaded who are being forced to compromise; while the invader will be rewarded.
How will this turn out, I wonder?
