News Rage

Part of the fun of being a news junkie, as one is, is trying to piece a full story together from all of it’s parts. A news story, more than anything else, is a puzzle. You pick the pieces from as many sources as you can to try and give you that full picture.

For me, that’s always meant listening, watching and reading from all sides of the political spectrum. It means that in the morning, on my way to work, I constantly switch my XM radio between BBC, CNN, FOX News, MSNBC, Bloomberg, NPR and CSPAN.

Most of the time, I listen quietly, taking in as many viewpoints as I can, trying to put together that possible.

From time to time though, something will continue to pop up that drives me bat-shit crazy; to the point where I’m yelling at the radio while the other commuters around me keep their distance.

Lately, the target of my rage has been FOX News, but not for the reasons you might think.

In almost every block of programming on FOX, there’s always at least one person who will say something to the effect of ‘Why is the mainstream media not covering this, or giving it the attention they should?’.

To which, no matter how many times it happens, I scream:

‘YOU ARE THE FUCKING MAINSTREAM MEDIA. YOU ARE MAIN-EST OF THE MAINSTREAM MEDIA. YOU ARE THE #1 NEWS NETWORK IN NORTH AMERICA. YOU HAVE BEEN #1 FOR 141 CONSECUTIVE MONTHS. YOU THINK THE MAINSTREAM MEDIA SHOULD COVER A STORY? SO FUCKING COVER IT.’

Anyhow, I don’t get why nobody wants to drive with me to work.

Judgment in Haste

I did something yesterday that I’m not proud of, something I pride myself in not doing. But, I did it, and should therefore own up to it.

Yesterday afternoon, a couple people in the office were talking about the head of Barilla pasta, who had apparently said some horrible things about the gay community, and gay marriage in specific. My gut reaction to this, like usual, was ‘this guy’s a fucking idiot.’

And, because I believe the hardest way to hurt a company is with your wallet, I decided no more Barilla pasta in my house.

With that, it was out of my head.

Hours later, as my wife and I were telling each other about our battles of the day (me with Nerf, and her with the babies), I made small mention of the Barilla thing and asked if she had heard of it.

She had not, so I told her what I knew.

That’s when I realized, I knew nothing. My entire basis from which I developed an opinion from, was a half-assed conversation overheard in the hall. I didn’t know what he said, I didn’t know where he said, I didn’t know what the context was and I didn’t even know his name. I hadn’t read one damn story about it, but had somehow passed judgment on a situation with nothing to base it on.

And to me, that’s one of the worst things we can do.

Whatever my opinion became of the Barilla guy, that doesn’t matter. I judged without information.

I won’t do that again, and I hope my ignorance can serve as an example of what not to do.

What is it good for?

I pretended to wash my hands, hoping against hope that no fecal matter was trapped under my finger nails, and left the bathroom.

Slowly, carefully, I walked through the doorway knowing she was out there. Waiting for me.

Left, right, my eyes darted as I took in the scene. At first glance, things seemed normal. Upon a second more in depth one though, people were working a little too hard. Hands, clenched on mice and keyboards. Eyes, staring only at their monitors.

The silence was palpable. They were waiting.

Whether it was my extreme bravery or my reluctance to ever feel fear, we’ll never know, but whatever it was, I was compelled to leap into action.

With my head down and the scream of the noble chinchilla coming from my throat, I ran towards my office where my weapons waited. But I was too late.

As I stepped into the sanctity of my office, she was there: the smile of the devil on her face as she pulled the trigger.

And shot me in the face.

…our NERF battles are escalating out of control.
